Unpopular opinion, but I actually like the stealth section here. You’ve just received a sword, and all of the sudden, it’s taken away from you and you’re forced to slowly move through the fortress by cover of a barrel, instead of running, guns blazing (sword-blazing) inside to rescue your sister. This dungeon is best known for the hate-garnering stealth section on your first visit. It’s not a difficult fight, but it’s one of my favorite Ganondorf battles in the series.įorsaken Fortress is a two part dungeon in the same vein as Hyrule Castle from A Link to the Past, although I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who argues that Wind Waker does it better. The final battle with Ganondorf is a tag team battle with Zelda, who shoots Light Arrows at Ganondorf, stunning him so you can attack. You’ll go through three Puppet Ganon stages, each of which has a blue orb attached to it that you need to shoot with a Light Arrow. It all leads up to the final battle with Ganondorf, and some of the best story bits in the series, with Ganon’s ‘covet the wind’ speech. I like it, but I think they could’ve changed up the Phantom Ganon battle a little each time. And then you’ll have to do this several more times, the exact same way. Once he’s defeated, he’ll disappear, leaving his sword, which will fall to the floor, with its hilt pointing towards the correct door to take. This time he shoots multiple orbs at you, so you have to use your spin attack to hit them back. Once you jump down into the dungeon’s depths, you’ll encounter Phantom Ganon, who showed up earlier at the Forsaken Fortress. After defeating him, you’ll get the classic Light Arrows needed to defeat Ganon. The only hint from the room you’ll need, is written on a tablet, which tells you that the hilt of Ganon’s ‘servants’ will guide you through a maze towards him. It just tells you how to open up a portal in a different room, which allows the King of Red Lions into the dungeon, so you can leave and get any potions you might need. In the next portion, you’ll arrive in a room where you’ll get a hint from the King of Red Lions to pay attention to the details of the room, as they’ll be very important. I don’t have a problem with boss rushes, but I just didn’t enjoy the boss fights in this game enough to really like this portion. Each hallway leads to the boss of the respective dungeon, so it’s mostly just a boss rush. This might have worked well as a ‘best of’ each of the dungeons, but the puzzles are basic and not very memorable. Each room has a sampling of puzzles from either Dragon Roost Cavern, the Forbidden Woods, the Earth Temple, or the Wind Temple. It has big Ocarina of Time Ganon’s Castle vibes with a big room with four hallways branching off from it. I think Ganon’s Tower is almost really cool. So here’s my ranking, and discussion of the dungeons of The Wind Waker. These dungeons are far from the most complex in the series, but several of them do unique and interesting things that influence the rest of the series. The Wind Waker, like Majora’s Mask, really shifts focus away from dungeons and towards the overworld and exploration.
